The Castro Ambassador is a new volunteer program being explored by the Castro CBD. Ambassadors will be trained by the CBD, work in pairs and will welcome tourists and visitors to the neighborhood, providing information and direction on events, businesses, and places of interest. The Ambassador schedule will be flexible meeting the needs of the individual volunteers and tourists. Volunteer Ambassador Job Description
Responsibilities/RoleVolunteer Ambassador will be deployed in the central business district, mainly Market St. between Church and Castro and then the heart of the Castro business district. They will work in pairs and generally have a Friday, Saturday, Sunday schedule, however the schedule will vary based on need, availability of volunteers and scheduling issues. Ambassadors shall wear approved uniforms with the Castro CBD logo. The role of the Volunteer Ambassador is to serve as “good will ambassadors and a guide for tourists”. The Volunteer Ambassador will be able to provide critical neighborhood information, giving directions, will be informed of community events and attractions and other gay related events in the City. The Volunteer Ambassadors are a friendly resource to improve the experience of all Castro users, residents, and visitors. Ambassadors are also responsible for immediately reporting crime, safety hazards and situations where someone is in need on the street to the CBD Dispatch Center, reporting to the Dispatch Center (or 311) any maintenance issues including burned-out streetlights, hazardous materials/situations, dumped debris, damaged news racks, and potholes/tripping hazards in sidewalks. It is not the responsibility of Ambassadors to deal directly with homeless or others on the street, but rather to report this situation to the CBD Dispatch (or 311).
The Volunteer Ambassador will be need a cell phone, business cards, ID, and be equipped with: City street maps, current information on events in the neighborhood, special exhibits, places of interest, location of businesses in the neighborhood, the Castro Guide, GLBT Historical Society map, in order to provide accurate information to tourists and other visitors. All material will also be available for mobile devices and will be on the Castro CBD website.
Volunteer Ambassador will provide a friendly and hospitable impression of the Castro by directing pedestrians to civic, shopping and business destinations. The Volunteer Ambassador will report crime to the dispatch immediately as well as communicate safety issues with the members of the SFPD who are patrolling the district. The Volunteer Ambassador will be knowledgeable about the properties and businesses in the district as well as City of San Francisco’s sights and attractions. If possible the CBD Dispatcher can also look up information for the Volunteer Ambassador.
